ASK SKEETER:
Got a question for Skeeter? Send it to: info@mw-snoskeeters.com
Q:
from The Karen
Dear Skeeter,
I'm like uh
teenager, and I've never been like, snowmobiling before. So I was like?
What is it like? And like would I like totally like it, and would my
friends like it too? Is this something that I should like talk to my Dad
about? I mean, is this like totally an expensive thing to do?
A:
Dear Karen,
I have been snowmobiling since I was a young larve, I can only tell you
that you should experience it at some point. I think getting a ride from
someone with a snowmobile might be the place to start. If you like it,
then I would consider a snowmobile safety course, offered through your
local DNR office. A couple Tips: Always wear a helmet. Always stop at
Stop signs. Be careful of other snowmobilers. Its a lot like driving in
the south in a snow storm. You might be confident in your abilities, but
someone else might not be, or not prepared for the terrain, and cause an
accident. Once I assisted a 22 yr old young man pull his (his brothers)
snowmobile off of a tree, becuase he was going too fast and didn't see
the curve coming. He luckily walked away, even though he trashed his
brothers new snowmobile. Don't know which is worse? ;-)
Definitely speak to your father! Not so much about snowmobiling, but the
fact that you used the word "LIKE" in your question 10 times,
and the word "Totally" twice. What's up with that?

Q:
from The Canadian Goose
Dear Skeeter,
I heard that
there has been a speed limit set on your trails, is it true?
A:
Yes, its true. This info came right from the DNR website: Snowmobilers
should be aware of an emergency rule that goes into affect Dec. 14 that
sets a night-time speed limit of 50 miles per hour statewide. Here
are some links to assist you in learning more about what the DNR is
doing and why:

Hope this helps answer some questions you might have.
Happy Sleddin'

Q:
from AL, Kentucky,
Dear Skeeter,
Weez thankin'
bout taykin a trip north to vasit sum of you trayals. Do there be sum
places to rent some sleds. I ain't trailerin' mine that fer up. That and
I my 67' ford won't pull no more since the back bumper come off in a
bumper pullin contest with "Coots" Chevy. Coot is a
heoooge Chevy fan. I still likes muh Ford, but the floorboards rusted
out, and the damn dash came off (on a back road here in KY) when I hit
that there possum sittin in a tree. Coot was thankin about comin' along
- but his wife/sister don't want him to. She thanks hees gunna get in
trouble wit me. We like beer and gerls. Dixie Chicks Rock!
A:
Well Al (and
"Coot"), What can I say? Let's first address the Rental issue.
Yes, there are a few places to rents sleds up here. Secondly, Chevy
Trucks are very nice, (I know Rich G. owner of the Timberline
Inn downtown Manitowish Waters, was thinking of selling his
Ford...I suppose to buy a Chevy! <wink>) PLEASE leave your
ford home. Thirdly , Coot can come along with you, and no one
will fault you for your fondness of women and beer, HOWEVER, please
exercise MODERATION, and caution. I certainly don't want you to plow
into me on the trails with belly full of beer and 5 girls hangning off
your sled - At that point, Coots wife/sister would be right, you would
be in HUGE trouble... with Skeeter! I suspect you might end up
like Earl...In the trunk (Dixie Chick reference.) See you on the trails.

Q:
from Skip, Palm Springs California
Hey Skeeter Dude,
Like, we are
really itchin to come east to do some, like, Snow Boarding. We, like,
heard you dudes really have a bitchin 1/2 pipe in Manitowish Waters. Can
you tell us where it is so when we road trip out there in B-Dogs VW Bus,
me and my compadre's can pack the pipe, pronto?
A:
Huh?
Dearest Skip-Dude, Pull up your baggy pants, tighten your belt, then
"like, get a clue!" BUZZ, BUZZ, BUZZ! Consider yourself STUNG
by Skeeter!
Dude, we don't have a 1/2 pipe in Manitowish Waters that I know
of, although I am going to check with the local plumber, I highly
suspect you and your "compadre's" are out of luck. If you
"Dudes" want to do some snowmobiling, feel free to contact us
again, otherwise check out the Xtreme Skiing on ESPN's web site!
Hang Loose,
Skeeter
Q:
from Big Mac, Mississippi
Skeeter,
We came up the 4th of July for some great sleddin' but it appears as
though the trails weren't open. All that was available was this great
beer pavilion hosted by the Manitowish Waters Lions Club. Yeah, you guys
were there too with Brats -n- stuff, but I really wanted to do some
sleddin'. What's up with the weather there?
A:
Well Big Mac,
Not sure what to tell you other than, you really should have checked out
our current weather conditions (located on the first page of our site).
This would have told you that the weather was warm (not condusive to
heavy snowfalls in these parts in the month of July). Now I know
Mississippi is warm, but that doesn't mean its always snowing up north!
For the record, as a true skeeter, I'm supposed to be dormant in winter
(yeah right). It makes my stinger even more "active"! Once
that first snowfall comes, Boy Oh Boy do I get the urge! Anyway,
thanks for coming up in July, please come back in winter, I'm sure the
trails will be more "A-Kin" to snowmobiling-
Skeeter
Q:
from Ole', Sheboygan, WI
Dear Skeeter,
We were on da
trails over da weekend and noticed dat use guys have some really nice
trails dere. Out here by us guys, its only farm land. Sometimes we
bounce so hard we fall off da sleds going troo da fields. Dat and da
fact you always gotta watch out for da cows! Just for da record, Bessy
don't like gettin chased wit da snowmobile. I learnt dat first hand when
she kicked a hoof size hole in da shroud of Ski Doo. Good ting she
missed my head, I didn't want dat hoof goin troo my helmet once. Ha Ha
Ha.
A:
Yaaaa Ole',
ve do have sum great trails here in da nort. Its alot like your I94
system der eh, cept smooder!
Seriously though, our trails are in great condition lately and our
groomer is doing an excellent job. I can't imagine riding in plowed corn
fields, that has got to hurt. Come back up nort soon! Give my best to
Bessy!
Skeeter
PS. Learn from Dale (below) watch your gas levels while riding on
the trails, it will save you lots of time and headaches!
Q:
from Dale, South Dakota
Dear Skeeter,
Just wanted to send off a quick note telling you thanks for the help
with my sled over the weekend. I spent 3 hrs trying to get my sled
started before you came along! Who would have thought it was OUT OF GAS!
You sure know how to make life simple, were you a mechanic in your
previous life?
Thanks, Dale
A:
Hi Dale, Yeah sometimes its the darndest things! Gas always helps
when trying to buzz down the trails here! And NO, I was not a mechanic
in my previous life, I was a rocket scientist. Just so you know if you
ever decide to pursue Rocket Science as a career, rockets don't fly
without fuel!
Happy Trails, or Trailering in your case... Just kidding, thanks for
coming to MW, come back again!
Skeeter
Q:
from Don in Madison WI:
Dear Skeeter,
I love Snowmobilling. I have done most of my sledding where the trails
are garbage to say the least. Could you tell me what your trails are
like, all sugar coating aside?
Thanks, Don
A:
Dear Don,
Our trails are outstanding. I have been on trails all over WI, MN and MI
and still think our trails are some of the best.
We maintain them so they stay in good shape. We constantly monitor our
trails making decisions regarding maintenence, the groomer, etc.
I recommend a trip to the North Woods for some Real Snowmobiling with
me, then you decide.
Skeeter
Q:
from Amy in Chicago IL:
Dear Mr. Skeeter,
I was wondering how often you snowmobile. When I come to Manitowish
Waters, I like to meet people and have a good time. Will I ever see you
on the trails? If so, how will I know its you?
Amy
A:
Dear Amy,
I snowmobile almost everyday. I would love to meet you and sled with you
sometime. You will know me on the trails from my wings and my Stinger!
(I am a masquito you know...) <wink>
